Platinum blonde. Icy white. Electric green or sapphire blue. These looks all start with the same service: scalp bleach (also called an on-scalp lightener or a “full bleach”). It’s a big step, so here’s what it involves and how I keep hair as healthy as possible along the way.
What is scalp bleach?
Unlike foils, which lighten selected strands, scalp bleach lightens all of your hair, starting right at the root. I use a gentle, on-scalp formula designed to be applied directly to the scalp, then tone or colour the hair to your final shade.
It’s the foundation for:
- Platinum, white and icy blonde
- Even, all-over blonde with no dark roots
- Vivid fashion colours like green, blue, pink or purple, which need a light base to show up brightly
Is scalp bleach right for me?
Scalp bleach suits you if you want a bold, all-over result and you’re happy to maintain it. It’s a higher-maintenance look, so I’ll talk you through the commitment first. It may not be the right choice straight away if your scalp is very sensitive, or if your hair is already heavily damaged or has dark box dye through it. In that case we might start with a colour correction plan.
Keeping your hair healthy
- Bond builders. I add bond protection to the lightener and often follow with a K18 treatment.
- No overlapping. On touch-ups I only lighten the new regrowth, never the hair that’s already light.
- Arrive with unwashed hair. Your scalp’s natural oils help protect it during the service.
Scalp bleach vs foils
| Scalp bleach | Foils | |
|---|---|---|
| Result | All-over, solid light base | Dimensional, multi-tonal |
| Regrowth | Clear root line | Softer grow-out |
| Touch-ups | Every 4–6 weeks | Every 6–12 weeks |
| Best for | Platinum and vivid colours | Natural-looking brightness |
Prefer softer brightness? Read foils vs balayage.
Looking after platinum or vivid colour
- Wash less often and always in cool water
- Use purple shampoo weekly for platinum; colour-depositing conditioner for vivids
- Use a weekly repair mask and heat protection every time
- Book regrowth touch-ups every four to six weeks
