Hair Colour Correction: What to Expect When Fixing Colour Gone Wrong

Colour correction with full head foils before and after – Fabuluxe Hair Studio Vermont

Box dye that went too dark. Highlights that turned orange. Banding from years of different colours. Colour that just isn’t what you asked for. If any of this sounds familiar, you’re not alone: colour correction is some of the most rewarding work I do at Fabuluxe Hair Studio.

Here’s what’s involved, so you know exactly what to expect.

What is colour correction?

Colour correction is any service that fixes or significantly changes existing colour, rather than simply refreshing it. Every correction is different, because every head of hair has its own history. Common examples include:

  • Lifting out dark box dye to go lighter
  • Neutralising orange, red or yellow tones
  • Blending patchy colour or banding (different shades in stripes)
  • Fixing highlights that are too chunky, too bright or too warm
  • Going from very light back to a natural darker shade

Why it starts with a consultation

Before I touch your hair, I need to know its story: what colours you’ve used, when, and whether you’ve had any treatments like keratin. Box dye and older colour layers behave differently from natural hair, so this history helps me choose the safest approach.

I’ll also do a strand test where needed, to see how your hair lifts and how strong it is.

Will it take more than one appointment?

Sometimes, yes. Hair has limits, and pushing too far in one sitting risks breakage. Depending on your starting point, a correction might be done in one longer appointment or over two or three sessions a few weeks apart. I’ll always be upfront about this at your consultation, so there are no surprises.

What happens during a colour correction

  1. Removing or lifting old colour with foils, a gentle colour remover or lightener, depending on what’s needed
  2. Bond protection throughout, often with K18, to keep the hair strong
  3. Toning and refining to create an even, flattering shade
  4. Finishing with a blow-dry and a home-care plan

How to prepare for your appointment

  • Be honest about your colour history, even the box dye from two years ago
  • Bring photos of the result you want (and what you don’t want)
  • Arrive with dry, unstyled hair
  • Allow plenty of time; corrections are longer appointments
  • Avoid colouring at home before you come in

Aftercare: protecting your new colour

  • Use a sulphate-free, colour-safe shampoo
  • Use purple or blue shampoo once a week if warmth is a concern (see how to fix brassy hair)
  • Book a toner refresh every six to eight weeks
  • Skip box dye, so we’re not starting over
