Thinking about going shorter? A bob is one of the most requested cuts in my Vermont salon, and for good reason: done well, it looks polished, feels lighter and can take years off your morning routine. But “bob” covers a lot of shapes. If you’re searching for a bob haircut in Vermont or nearby in Melbourne’s east, here’s how I help clients choose the right one for their hair, face and lifestyle.
Why a bob haircut suits so many people
A bob sits anywhere from the jawline to just above the shoulders, and that range is what makes it so versatile. With nearly 20 years behind the chair, I’ve found a well-cut bob works on fine, thick, straight and wavy hair alike. The key is matching the shape to the hair you actually have.
- Healthier-looking ends. Taking off dry, see-through lengths instantly makes hair look thicker and glossier.
- Less styling time. Shorter hair dries faster and holds its shape with less effort.
- Great with colour. A clean bob line shows off highlights, grey blending and glossy toners beautifully.
- Easy to refresh. Regular trims keep the shape crisp without a big commitment.
Graduated bob vs blunt bob vs long bob
These are the three bob styles I’m asked about most. Here’s a quick comparison to help you start the conversation.
| Graduated bob | Blunt bob | Long bob (lob) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shape | Shorter at the back, angled longer towards the front | One length with a strong, straight line | Collarbone length, often softly layered |
| Best for | Fine to medium hair that needs lift at the crown | Fine or straight hair that wants to look fuller | Anyone nervous about going too short, or wavy hair |
| Styling | Quick round-brush blow-dry for volume | Smooth blow-dry or flat iron for a sharp line | Air-dry, loose waves or sleek |
| Trim timing | Every 5–7 weeks to keep the angle | Every 6–8 weeks to keep the line crisp | Every 8–10 weeks |
How I choose the right bob for your face and hair
There’s no single “best” bob. During your consultation I look at a few things before I pick up the scissors:
- Hair density and texture. Fine hair often looks best with a solid perimeter, while thick hair may need internal layering so it doesn’t puff out.
- Natural movement. Cowlicks, crown direction and wave pattern all change where the length should sit.
- Face shape and neckline. The length and angle can lengthen a round face, soften a strong jaw or show off your neck.
- Your routine. If you like to wash and go, I’ll cut for that, not for a look that needs a 30-minute blow-dry.
Pairing a bob with colour
A new bob is the perfect moment to refresh your colour. Shorter hair means less length to lighten, and a fresh cut removes old, faded or brassy ends. The client in the photo above came in for a regrowth tint and a graduated bob, and the combination made her soft blonde look brighter and much more polished.
- Fine foils or grey blending add brightness and movement to a short shape.
- A gloss or toner makes a blunt line look extra shiny.
- Face-framing highlights lift the front of a graduated or angled bob.

Caring for your bob between appointments
- Book trims on time. Bobs lose their shape faster than long hair, so I’ll suggest a rebooking window that suits your cut.
- Use heat protection. Shorter styles are often blow-dried or straightened daily, so protect those ends.
- Keep products light. Heavy creams can flatten a bob. A light mousse or texture spray usually works best.
- Look after colour. A sulphate-free shampoo and a regular treatment keep colour and shine looking fresh.
Thinking of a bob? Here’s what to bring
- Two or three photos of bobs you love, and one you don’t, so I can see what you’re after.
- An idea of how much time you spend styling each morning.
- Your colour history, especially if you’ve had box dye or lightener.
If you’re nervous about going short, we can start with a long bob and take it shorter next time. Many of my clients come from Vermont South, Nunawading, Mitcham, Forest Hill, Blackburn and Ringwood, and plenty make the switch gradually.
