If you’re colouring your roots every three or four weeks just to hide a line of grey, you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common frustrations I hear from clients at my Vermont salon. The good news is there’s a softer option: grey blending.
Grey blending doesn’t try to hide every grey hair. Instead, it works with your grey, so regrowth looks natural and you can go much longer between appointments.
What is grey blending?
Grey blending uses fine foils (highlights, lowlights or both), finished with a toner, to blur the contrast between your natural grey and the rest of your hair. Rather than one solid colour that shows a stripe of grey as soon as it grows, you get a soft, dimensional mix of tones where new grey simply blends in.
Why clients love grey blending
- No harsh regrowth line. Grey grows into the blend instead of standing out against solid colour.
- Fewer salon visits. Most clients stretch to every 8–12 weeks instead of every 3–4.
- A softer, brighter look. Lighter, multi-tonal colour is often more flattering as our skin tone changes.
- A gentle path to going grey. If you’d like to transition to your natural colour one day, blending makes the journey far less dramatic.
Grey blending vs root colour: what’s the difference?
| Root colour (regrowth tint) | Grey blending | |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage | Covers grey completely | Softens and blends grey |
| Finish | One solid colour | Dimensional, multi-tonal |
| Regrowth | Visible line within weeks | Soft and gradual |
| Typical visits | Every 3–6 weeks | Every 8–12 weeks |
Who suits grey blending?
Grey blending works best if you have roughly 30% grey or more, you’re tired of frequent root touch-ups, or you’d like a lighter, brighter look. It suits fair to medium natural colours especially well, and I can adapt it for darker hair using a mix of highlights and lowlights so the result still looks natural.
If you’ve been colouring your hair dark for years, we may need a gradual approach over a couple of appointments. I’ll always tell you honestly what’s achievable in one visit.
What happens at your appointment?
- Consultation. We talk about how much grey you have, how you’d like it to look and how often you want to come in.
- Foils. I place fine highlights and/or lowlights, focusing on your parting and hairline, where grey shows first.
- Toner. A gloss or toner softens everything together and sets the final shade, whether that’s creamy beige, cool ash or a warmer honey.
- Finish. A blow-dry, plus tips on keeping your tone fresh at home.
Keeping your grey blend looking fresh
- Use a purple or silver shampoo once a week to keep grey and blonde tones bright, not yellow
- Choose a sulphate-free shampoo to help your toner last
- Protect your hair from heat and strong sun, which can make grey look dull or brassy
- Book a quick toner refresh between foil appointments if you love a crisp, bright finish
