Here’s what lived-in blonde actually is, who it suits, and how to keep it looking fresh.
What is lived-in blonde?
Lived-in blonde is a blend of foils, soft root shading and toner. Instead of bright blonde starting right at the scalp, I keep a little of your natural depth at the root and melt it into lighter pieces through the lengths and ends.
The result looks natural and dimensional, like blonde you’ve grown into rather than blonde that’s just been done.

Who suits lived-in blonde?
Almost anyone who wants to go lighter without a high-maintenance routine. It works beautifully on natural brunettes and dark blondes, on busy clients who can’t get to the salon every six weeks, and on anyone growing out solid blonde or old highlights.
If your hair is already lightened or damaged, I’ll check its condition first and may suggest a bond-building treatment such as K18 to keep it strong.
How often will I need a lived-in blonde touch-up?
Because the root is softened, most clients come back every three to four months for foils, depending on how fast their hair grows and how bright they like it. In between, a quick toner refresh keeps the tone clean and glossy.
Keeping your blonde bright at home
- Use a colour-safe, sulphate-free shampoo
- Use a purple shampoo once a week if you notice yellow tones
- Always use heat protection and keep hot tools below 180°C
- Book a toner refresh between foil appointments to keep your tone fresh
